Morocco has more than 40 golf courses, and the quality surprises almost every first-time visitor. You will find a Robert Trent Jones Sr. championship layout in a cork oak forest, a Kyle Phillips course on Atlantic cliffs, desert-style golf with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains as a backdrop, and a Marrakech club that has been in play since 1923.

This is our ranking of the twelve courses worth building a trip around, with what each one actually plays like and who it suits. We book tee times at all of them.

1. Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, Rabat

If you play one course in Morocco, play this one. Robert Trent Jones Sr. routed the Red Course through a mature cork oak forest just outside Rabat, and it has been the country’s championship venue since 1971, home of the Hassan II Trophy. The corridors are tree-lined and unforgiving, the greens are large and firm, and the par-3 played to an island green is the most photographed hole in Moroccan golf.

There are three courses on site — Red, Blue and a shorter Green — so a two-night stop can give you two very different rounds. It pairs naturally with The Ritz-Carlton Rabat, Dar Es Salam, which sits on the estate itself.

2. Assoufid Golf Club, Marrakech

The best modern course in Marrakech, and the one our guests most often name as their favourite round of the trip. Assoufid is desert golf: sand, scrub and rumpled fairways rather than wall-to-wall green, with the High Atlas filling the horizon on every south-facing tee. The routing rewards thought — there are wide landing areas, but the approach angle matters enormously.

Suits: every handicap. It is playable off the front tees and genuinely testing off the back. It appears in both our Platinum and Gold Marrakech passes.

3. Al Maaden Golf Resort, Marrakech

Kyle Phillips’s Marrakech course is the most visually striking round in the city: water in play on a run of holes, immaculate conditioning, and large contemporary sculptures placed around the property. The greens are quick and subtly contoured, and the closing stretch is one of the strongest in Morocco.

Suits: confident ball-strikers who enjoy a course that punishes a loose second shot.

4. Tazegzout Golf Club, Taghazout Bay (Agadir)

Also by Kyle Phillips, and completely different in character: 18 holes strung along cliffs above the Atlantic north of Agadir, with argan trees, sea views from almost every tee and a breeze that changes club selection through the afternoon. Several holes play directly towards the ocean, and the drop in elevation makes distance control the whole game.

Suits: anyone who values the walk as much as the score. Stay at the Hyatt Regency Taghazout Bay and you are minutes away; it is included in the Agadir 5-day pass.

5. Amelkis Golf Club, Marrakech

Cabell Robinson’s 27-hole layout, opened in the mid-1990s next to the Amelkis estate, is the classic Marrakech championship experience: palm-lined fairways, red-earth bunkering, water on the closing holes and views to the Atlas. It has hosted professional golf and still plays like a tournament course.

Suits: golfers who like a traditional, tree-framed test. It anchors our Silver Marrakech passes.

6. Fairmont Royal Palm, Marrakech

Another Cabell Robinson design, set in an olive-grove estate 20 minutes from the city on the Amizmiz road. It is the most manicured course in Morocco and the most relaxed to play — wide, beautifully conditioned and framed by mountains. The resort itself is one of the finest in the country, and the stay-and-play package is our most requested luxury option.

Suits: golfers travelling with non-golfing partners. It is the headline course on our Platinum passes.

7. Samanah Country Club, Marrakech

A Nicklaus Design course on the Amizmiz road with generous fairways, big greens and long views. It plays firmer and faster than most Marrakech courses, which makes it a good change of pace mid-week.

Suits: higher handicappers who want a course that does not punish a wayward drive.

8. Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort, El Jadida

Gary Player’s links on the Atlantic coast an hour south of Casablanca is the closest thing Morocco has to a British or Irish links: dunes, exposed holes, firm turf and wind that decides the round. The resort behind it is a full destination in its own right — see the Mazagan stay-and-play.

9. Soleil Golf Club, Agadir

Thirty-six holes on one site, split between the Tikida course and the longer Championship course, which is why it appears in every one of our Agadir golf passes. Flat, walkable, well-conditioned and dependable in any month.

Suits: groups playing consecutive days who want variety without changing venue.

10. Royal Golf Marrakech

Founded in 1923, this is one of the oldest clubs in Morocco and the one with the most atmosphere: mature eucalyptus, orange and palm trees, tight tree-lined corridors, and a clubhouse that feels like a piece of history. Now 27 holes, it is short by modern standards but demands accuracy — and its shade is a real asset in warm months.

Suits: golfers who value character over yardage.

11. Mogador Golf Club, Essaouira

Gary Player again, this time in the dunes and eucalyptus forest just south of Essaouira. The wind that makes Essaouira a kitesurfing capital also makes this a proper test — the same hole can be a wedge or a hybrid depending on the hour. See the Essaouira guide.

Suits: a day trip from Marrakech, or a two-night coastal add-on.

12. The Montgomerie Marrakech

Colin Montgomerie’s Marrakech course is tighter and more tactical than its neighbours, with strong par 3s and a premium on positioning off the tee. A good counterweight to the wider resort courses in the same rotation.

Suits: accurate players who prefer plotting to power.

How much do these courses cost to play?

Green fees in Morocco generally run from about €55 at a resort course to €120 at a championship layout in high season, with buggies (€25–€35) and caddies charged separately. Prices rise between December and April and soften in summer.

The cheaper route is a pass. Our golf passes bundle three, four or five rounds across a rotation of courses in one city:

Building a trip around these courses

Most golfers we work with play three or four of these in a week, based in one city. Marrakech gives you the widest choice within a 30-minute radius; Agadir gives you the most reliable weather; combining Rabat with El Jadida gives you the two best championship tests in the country back to back.
